Mining That Makes a Positive Difference
Carrascal Nickel Corporation (“CNC”) has experienced rapid annual growth since its establishment in 2006. Thanks to the commendabe vision, teamwork and collaboration of its management team, CNC was able to distinguish itself from its peers in Mindanao through its successful business operations and its extensive corporate social responsibility projects (“CSR”). The company lives up to its motto, “Mining that Makes a Difference.”
Antonio Co, President, explains, “During our short period of operation, Carrascal Nickel Corporation has made a positive impact on the community through its Social Development and Management Program (“SDMP”) and CSR programs. As soon as we begin exploration works, we already establish meaningful relationships with our host communities. We take care of local communities starting with the exploration phase. The town of Carrascal where we operate is a fifth-class municipality but through the contribution of the mining companies like CNC, it is a candidate to be a first-class municipality. We put the concerns of the community and environment at the core of our mining operation. As recognition to our environment protection efforts the company was awarded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources the ”Best Mining Forest” award for 2013. We continue to improve our environmental protection and we will continue to focus on ensuring the health and safety of our employees as well as the benefits of the local community.” Thanks to its emphasis on safety, as of December 2013 the company had reached an impressive 12 million man hours worked without lost time accident.
Expanding into new markets
Carrascal Nickel Corporation exports low- to high-grade nickel mainly to customers in China, exporting an average five million wet metric tons per year, but also Mr. Co says, “With our expected future increase in ore production, we will target other export markets in other countries.” The company currently mines nickel ores from lateritic ore containing marketable nickel and iron ore. All its current mining operations are conducted above ground using contour mining techniques. Through its subsidiaries, CNC has other mineral claims under exploration and development for the mining of gold, copper and iron. Eventually, CNC will put up its own processing plant to add more value to its products.
Carrascal Nickel welcomes more international contacts. Outlining the company’s goals, Mr. Co says, “We seek to continuously grow in our field, ensuring industrial and technological advancement, economic development and providing livelihood. Our vision is to be the Philippines’ leading diversified mineral-resource organization that makes a difference and is respected by our partner communities.”
