Success Story: Modern Mall and Hotel Complex

Mayfair Plaza, which opened in 2004, has introduced the modern mall to shoppers in Tanzania. Mohammed Ali, Executive Manager, explains, “The world is changing, but Africa is still lagging behind. Our idea for Mayfair Plaza was to introduce a new kind of shopping complex for the African market.” The venture has proved to be a rousing success.

Mayfair Plaza contains a full range of facilities and services under one roof, from banks and shops to a spa, a hotel, serviced apartments, a pool and gym and much more. “People come here for business meetings and bring their families, who can enjoy the mall during the meeting. This is a safe environment that people visit for business and pleasure,” Mr. Ali points out.

Serviced apartments for long-stay guests

The Mayfair Hotel within Mayfair Plaza has 38 guestrooms as well as 24 serviced apartments designed for long-stay guests; the serviced apartments contain fully equipped kitchens. Mr. Ali says, “Our hotel and apartments are very popular because they are very secure and guests can find everything they need in one place.”
Mayfair Plaza’s owners are open to international partnerships for many planned projects, including opening a convenience store in the mall and developing a 900 sq m building within the mall. Mr. Ali explains, “We want to establish long-term partnerships, not just for a couple of years.”

Mr. Ali is very interested in working with Asian partners and points out that the furniture store in the mall sells Malaysian furniture and many Asians in Tanzania come to the mall to shop or to stay at the hotel. To future investors, Mr. Ali says, “Tanzania is developing more every day and has tremendous prospects in every sector of the economy, from minerals and natural resources to agriculture and tourism. Investors should come here and see the potential for themselves.”
