Sarawak Energy Berhad, a state-owned utility company is helping to support Sarawak’s growth while enhancing its own position in the regional energy sector. Mr. Torstein Dale Sjøtveit, CEO, explains, “Our top priority is to provide the state with sufficient supply of competitively priced, high-quality renewable energy for the energy-intensive industry, as that will attract more foreign direct investment to Sarawak. By developing clean power for new industries at competitive prices, we are creating new opportunities in Sarawak for generations to come.”
Building on a proud history of more than 70 years as an effective local utility company, Sarawak Energy is taking bold steps to support the transformation of Sarawak into a modern and high income state.
“We are transforming this company from a traditional utility company into a modern, aggressively developing energy company that can meet the needs of Sarawak companies as well as international enterprises that expect global standards,” Mr. Sjøtveit says proudly. Since 2010, Sarawak Energy has hired and trained 1,400 new staff members, moved into a new corporate HQ that is contemporary and green, modernized and improved its operations and launched a new logo to reflect these changes.
Sarawak Energy travels throughout Asia up to the Middle East to make investors aware of the advantages of targeting Sarawak as their preferred destination for investments. Mr. Sjøtveit explains, “Sarawak has everything going for it; competitively priced energy, multi-racial society, political stability and a strong regulatory environment. Most of all, Sarawak Energy is offering power at globally competitive prices through stable long-term contracts, something which is now almost impossible to find anywhere else in Asia. We have signed several major deals this year and we have a long line of customers.”
